Competitor citation benchmarking

Competitor citation benchmarking establishes who is cited today for the organization’s buyer prompts, with which pages, in which formats, on which engines, and what it would take to displace them. It is needed at the start of a GEO program to set realistic targets, when competitors consistently appear in answers and the organization does not, when content investment must be directed at the prompts that can be won, or when leadership asks how the organization compares. Benchmarking produces a competitor citation map across engines and prompt clusters, an analysis of the cited pages and why they are chosen, the gaps between the organization’s assets and the cited ones, and the prioritized content and entity actions that close them.

Scope

What the review covers.

  • Competitor set definition, including non-obvious sources that win citations
  • Citation capture across engines and prompt clusters
  • Analysis of cited pages: format, depth, authorship, freshness, structure
  • Entity comparison: profiles, schema, consistency
  • Gap analysis against the organization’s assets
  • Prioritized actions and target prompts

Questions

Asked before engaging.

Who are the competitors in AI answers?

Often not the commercial competitors. Publishers, associations and directories win many citations. The map shows who actually appears.

Can we displace a national publisher?

Sometimes, on specific prompts where expertise and specificity beat scale. The plan targets prompts that can be won, not all of them.

How often is the benchmark repeated?

Quarterly as a standard, because the cited sources change as engines and content change.
