Asset and configuration review
An asset and configuration review establishes what the organization actually has and how it is actually configured: servers, storage, network devices, cloud resources and the settings on each, reconciled against inventories, standards and documentation that have usually drifted from reality. It is needed when the inventory cannot be trusted, when configuration standards exist but adherence is unknown, when an audit or customer asks for an accurate asset list, when planning a migration or consolidation, or after an incident that exploited a forgotten system. The review produces a reconciled inventory, a comparison of each asset class against its configuration baseline, the deviations ranked by risk, and the process that keeps inventory and configuration accurate afterward.
Scope
What the review covers.
- Discovery across on-premises, cloud and network, reconciled with records
- Ownership, purpose and support status per asset
- Configuration baselines per asset class and the deviations found
- Unknown, orphaned and unmanaged assets
- Risk ranking of deviations
- Inventory and configuration management process going forward

Questions
Asked before engaging.
How many unknown assets do you usually find?
Enough to justify the review in almost every environment. The number is less important than what the unknown assets can reach.
Does this cover cloud resources?
Yes. Cloud sprawl is now the most common source of unmanaged assets.
How does this relate to hardware lifecycle review?
The asset review establishes what exists; the lifecycle review assesses the risk of its age and support. They share the inventory.
