Escalation and incident coordination

Escalation and incident coordination defines what happens when something is wrong and makes sure it happens: who is called, in what order, with what authority, how the technical response is coordinated with legal, insurance, communications and leadership, and how the record is kept. It is needed when escalation depends on one person’s phone number, when an incident response plan exists on paper but has never been exercised in practice, when the organization uses several providers who would each need to be coordinated, or when a cyber insurance policy requires defined notification steps. Coordination produces an escalation matrix with contacts and authorities, a coordination role during incidents, the liaison with external parties, and the incident record that supports insurance claims, regulatory notifications and the post-incident review.

  • Severity classification and the response each severity triggers
  • Coordination role during incidents across internal teams and providers
  • Liaison with legal, forensic, insurance and communications partners
  • Incident record keeping for insurers, regulators and review
  • Exercise of the escalation path on a schedule

Questions

Asked before engaging.

Are you our incident response provider?

We coordinate the response and the parties involved. Forensic investigation is provided by specialist partners we coordinate, or by your retained firm.

Do you exercise the plan?

Yes. Tabletop exercises test the escalation path and the decisions. See Tabletop exercises under Incident Readiness.

What does the insurer need from the record?

A timeline, the decisions taken, who was notified when, and the evidence preserved. The incident record is built to supply exactly that.
