Remote hands / smart hands coordination
Remote hands and smart hands coordination manages the physical tasks at a data center, colocation site or remote office that must be performed by someone on site under the direction of the organization’s engineers: power cycling, cable moves, component replacement, console access, visual checks and media handling. It is needed when the organization’s staff are not where its equipment is, when colocation providers offer remote hands but the requests are poorly specified and go wrong, when a failure requires immediate physical action, or when an audit requires a record of who touched what. Coordination produces clear task specifications, the engagement of the provider or our own field resources, real-time direction during the task, and a record of what was done with evidence.

Questions
Asked before engaging.
Why coordinate remote hands at all?
Because a poorly specified request is how the wrong cable gets pulled. Coordination turns a request into a verified task.
Can you provide the hands yourselves?
At many sites, yes, through vetted field resources. Elsewhere we coordinate the provider’s service.
What about handling backup media or drives?
Under custody rules defined in the task specification, with the record to prove it.
