AI Overviews versus AI Mode

AI Overviews are generated summaries that appear at the top of a standard Google results page for some queries, with cited sources and the familiar results beneath. AI Mode is a separate conversational search experience in which the whole response is generated, follow-up questions are expected, and sources are presented within and alongside the answer. Both draw on Google’s index and both cite pages, so the same foundations apply. They differ in how much of the page they occupy, how queries are decomposed, and how visibility should be measured.

Criteria

Each one, explained.

Where it appears

An AI Overview sits above results the user can still scroll to; AI Mode replaces them with a conversation. A site that depends on clicks from ranked results is affected differently by each: an Overview can absorb the click, and AI Mode removes the list.

How the answer is built

AI Mode decomposes a question into parts and retrieves for each. A page that answers only the headline question may be passed over for pages that answer the parts: what a term means, how two options compare, which criteria matter. That is why glossary, comparison and question pages earn citations in AI Mode that a single service page does not.

Citations

Both cite, but the surface differs. Overviews show a compact source list; AI Mode cites within the response and changes with each follow-up. Citation tracking has to record the prompt, the turn and the engine, or the numbers are not comparable month to month.

Measurement

Overviews can be measured beside rankings for the same query. AI Mode needs a prompt set with follow-ups and repeated runs. Treating them as one surface hides which one is being won.

Recommendation

Who each option suits.

Treat them as two surfaces with one foundation. Pages that lead with a declarative answer, carry structured data and are signed by a verifiable author are eligible for both. To be cited in AI Mode specifically, publish the component answers, definitions, comparisons and criteria, that its decomposition retrieves, and measure both surfaces separately in the prompt set.
