ChatGPT versus Perplexity versus Gemini as referral sources

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini each retrieve from the web and cite sources, but they differ in how retrieval is triggered, how prominently sources are shown, whether a referrer reaches your analytics, and which crawler must be allowed. Perplexity is built around citations and shows them for nearly every answer. ChatGPT searches when it judges the question needs current information and cites within the answer. Gemini draws on Google’s index and its answers resemble AI Mode. Measurement must treat them as three engines with three behaviors, not one channel.

Criteria

Each one, explained.

Retrieval and crawler access

An engine cannot cite what its crawler could not fetch. Each engine names its crawler, and hosting or security layers block some by default. Crawl readiness is the first step for all three, and the log review shows which crawlers actually arrive.

Citation display

Perplexity’s numbered citations make page-level tracking straightforward. ChatGPT’s citations vary by answer and by whether it searched. Gemini’s presentation changes with the surface. The citation ledger records what is observable on each and states the method.

Referrers

Referred visits are a partial signal: some engines pass a referrer, some do not, and many visits arrive as direct traffic after the engine named you. Attribution should record what is observable rather than inventing precision.

Measurement

The same prompt set run on each engine, repeatedly, with presence, citation, position and sentiment recorded. Share of voice by engine shows where you are winning. Lost and won prompts show what changed.

Recommendation

Who each option suits.

Allow all three crawlers, measure all three engines, and expect them to behave differently. For professional and technical categories, Perplexity and ChatGPT are usually where citations are first observable; Gemini and AI Mode follow Google’s index and respond to the same foundations as search. Do not judge the program on referred sessions from any of them; judge it on share of voice and on qualified inquiries by source.
