Cloudflare Pages versus managed WordPress hosting

Cloudflare Pages serves a static site from Cloudflare’s edge network with generous limits, built-in TLS, headers and redirects, and cost that rounds to zero for most sites. Managed WordPress hosting runs the WordPress application for you, handling updates, backups and caching, at a monthly price and with the application’s attack surface still present. The comparison is really between hosting a finished site and hosting a running application. For a site built statically, Pages is the simpler and safer choice; for a site that must be WordPress, managed hosting reduces but does not remove the maintenance burden.

Criteria

Each one, explained.

What is hosted

Pages hosts the output of a build: HTML, CSS, scripts, images. There is no application to run. Managed WordPress hosts an application that executes for each request, and however well it is managed, it is still an application with logins, plugins and a database.

Security maintenance

Managed hosts patch WordPress core and often themes; plugins remain the site owner’s risk and the most common entry point. Pages has no application layer to patch. Security work on a Pages site is headers, content security policy, DNS and email authentication, which are configuration rather than maintenance.

Crawler settings

Both can block the crawlers that matter. Cloudflare zones created recently can block AI crawlers by default and may add a managed robots.txt. Managed hosts run firewalls and plugins that do the same. In either case, crawl readiness is a settings review followed by a log review, and should be repeated after changes.

Cost and portability

Pages is free or near free for most sites and the output is portable. Managed WordPress carries a monthly fee that scales, and migration away is a project.

Recommendation

Who each option suits.

If the site is static or can be, Cloudflare Pages is the better choice on security, speed and cost, with one caution: review the zone’s crawler settings and robots behavior before launch. If the site must remain WordPress, managed hosting is better than self-hosting, but budget for plugin risk, performance work and a security review of the whole marketing stack.
