GEO versus SEO
SEO is the practice of ranking pages in a list of search results. GEO, generative engine optimization, is the practice of being retrieved, cited and named inside the answers that ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI features generate. They share foundations: crawlable pages, clear structure, credible authorship. They differ in the unit of success, in what the systems reward, and in how results are measured. Most organizations need the foundations of both, but the investment that compounds now is in being the cited source rather than the tenth blue link.
At a glance
The criteria that decide it.
| Criterion | GEO | SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of success | A citation or mention inside a generated answer | A position in a ranked list of results |
| What the system rewards | Specific, verifiable, attributed answers to defined questions | Relevance, links, technical quality and engagement signals |
| Authorship | Named, verifiable experts weigh heavily | Helpful, but often anonymous content still ranks |
| Measurement | Share of voice and citations across several engines, by prompt | Rankings, impressions and clicks from one engine’s console |
| Durability | Citations compound as entity trust builds; engines change retrieval behavior | Rankings fluctuate with algorithm updates and competition |
| Traffic | Fewer visits, higher intent; the answer may satisfy without a click | More visits, mixed intent |
Criteria
Each one, explained.
Unit of success
A ranking is a position; a citation is an endorsement inside the answer the buyer reads. A page can rank well and never be cited, because the engines select for answerability and attribution rather than for the signals that produce rankings alone. Measuring one does not tell you about the other.
What the systems reward
Retrieval systems lift the passage that answers the question most directly, from a source they can identify and trust. That favors a declarative answer block in the first screen, structured data that states what the page is, and an author the engine can verify. Ranking systems weigh relevance, links and technical quality; they tolerate anonymous content that GEO does not.
Measurement
SEO has one console and a rank. GEO has several engines, each non-deterministic, so measurement means a defined prompt set run repeatedly with presence, citation, position and sentiment recorded. A single screenshot proves nothing. The method is what makes the number mean something.
Durability
Rankings move with every algorithm update and every competitor. Citations build on entity trust, which compounds: consistent facts, verifiable authors, a growing body of attributed answers. Engines also change retrieval behavior, so citation tracking by page and engine is needed to tell site changes from engine changes.
Traffic
Answer engines send fewer visitors than ranked results because the answer often satisfies the question. The visitors who do arrive have already been told who you are. Measurement should count qualified inquiries by source, not sessions.
Recommendation
Who each option suits.
Organizations that already rank and want to keep ranking should keep the SEO foundations and add GEO measurement to see whether they are cited. Organizations whose buyers ask engines which provider to trust, which includes most professional, technical and regulated categories, should invest in the GEO program: entity, authors, authority content, crawl readiness and measurement. The foundations overlap, so the choice is about the unit of success you manage to, and that should be the citation.
