Original research versus curated content
Original research publishes a number nobody else has, with a stated method: a survey, a benchmark, a log study, a measured comparison. Curated content gathers and organizes what others have published, adding structure and commentary. Engines, journalists and competitors must attribute an original number to its source; a curated page competes with every other summary of the same material. Research is harder, slower and requires data the organization controls; it is also the strongest single citation asset there is. Curation is useful as supporting material and weak as a citation magnet.
At a glance
The criteria that decide it.
| Criterion | Original research | Curated content |
|---|---|---|
| What it offers | A unique, attributable finding | Organization of existing findings |
| Attribution | Required by anyone who uses the number | Rarely given; the original source is cited instead |
| Data required | Data the organization controls or can collect lawfully | None beyond published sources |
| Method | Stated, with limitations, able to survive expert scrutiny | Editorial judgment |
| Effort | High; quarterly or annual cadence | Low; continuous |
| Risk | Method criticism; must be defensible | Thin-content treatment; low distinctiveness |
Criteria
Each one, explained.
What each offers
An engine answering “what percentage of firms do X” cites the study that measured it. It does not cite the page that summarized the study. Original research puts the organization in the first position; curation puts it in the second at best.
Data and method
Most organizations have more research-worthy data than they realize: operational records, anonymized and aggregated, answer questions whole sectors ask. The method must be stated with its limitations and an expert must stand behind it, because a disputed method undoes the asset.
Effort and cadence
Research is a project: design, collection, analysis, publication, distribution. An annual flagship study and quarterly smaller pieces is a sustainable cadence. Curation can fill the weeks between, as long as it is not mistaken for authority.
Risk
Research carries method risk, which review and honesty about limitations manage. Curation carries distinctiveness risk: it looks like everything else and engines treat it that way.
Recommendation
Who each option suits.
Publish original research on a cadence the organization can sustain, starting with the data it already controls, and distribute it to the sources engines cite. Use curation sparingly and only where it organizes material for buyers in a way nobody else has. Our own Research hub publishes studies with method and limitations stated; that is the standard.
