Security questionnaire versus independent assessment
A security questionnaire is a set of questions a buyer sends to a vendor, answered by the vendor about itself. An independent assessment is an examination of the vendor’s controls by a party with no stake in the answer, with evidence inspected and findings reported. Questionnaires are cheap, scalable and self-reported; they document what the vendor says. Assessments are costlier and prove what the vendor does. For vendors whose failure would be consequential, buyers should require independent evidence, and vendors who want to win those buyers should have it ready before they are asked.
At a glance
The criteria that decide it.
| Criterion | Security questionnaire | Independent assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Who answers | The vendor, about itself | An independent examiner |
| What is verified | Nothing, unless evidence is attached and checked | Controls, against evidence |
| Reliability | Depends on the vendor’s honesty and knowledge | High, within scope |
| Cost | Low per vendor | Engagement fee |
| Scalability | Hundreds of vendors | Reserved for consequential vendors |
| Best use | Screening and low-consequence vendors | Consequential vendors and partners |
Criteria
Each one, explained.
What each verifies
A questionnaire answer is a claim. Some vendors answer carefully; others answer optimistically; many answer without knowing. Attached evidence counts only when someone checks it. An independent assessment is the checking.
Reliability and cost
Questionnaires scale across a vendor base at low cost and give a first sort. Assessments cost real money and are reserved for the vendors that matter. The error is treating the questionnaire as proof for a vendor whose failure would be a breach.
For vendors
A vendor that answers questionnaires accurately, with evidence organized to the common frameworks, closes deals faster. A vendor with an independent assessment or an attestation closes the consequential ones. Evidence preparation is what makes both possible.
For buyers
Classify vendors by consequence. Screen everyone with a questionnaire; require independent evidence from the few whose compromise would be yours. Review the evidence rather than filing it.
Recommendation
Who each option suits.
Use questionnaires to screen and independent assessments to decide. Buyers should require independent evidence from consequential vendors and read it. Vendors should prepare evidence that answers questionnaires accurately and commission independent assessment before the consequential buyer asks, because by then it is too late.
