Static site versus WordPress for a professional practice
A static site is generated from content files by a build step and served as finished HTML with no database, no plugins and no administrator login. WordPress is a content management system that assembles each page from a database with plugins and themes, and must be patched and defended continuously. For a professional practice that depends on being found, trusted and never breached, the static approach removes an entire class of risk and makes every word readable to crawlers that do not execute JavaScript. WordPress offers familiar editing and a large ecosystem at the cost of maintenance and attack surface.
At a glance
The criteria that decide it.
| Criterion | Static site | WordPress |
|---|---|---|
| Attack surface | None to patch: no CMS, plugins, database or login | Core, plugins, themes and logins all need patching and defense |
| Speed | Finished HTML from the edge; fast by construction | Depends on hosting, caching and plugin discipline |
| Crawlability | Every word in the HTML response | Usually good; page builders and scripts can hide content |
| Editing | Content files in a repository; lightweight editor available | Familiar visual editor |
| Scale | Hundreds or thousands of generated pages with consistent structure | Possible; consistency depends on discipline and plugins |
| Cost | Hosting that rounds to zero; build pipeline maintained | Hosting, plugin licenses, maintenance and incident response |
Criteria
Each one, explained.
Attack surface
Professional practices are attacked through their websites because the sites are easy targets: outdated plugins, weak logins, exposed administration. A static site has nothing to log in to and nothing to patch at the application layer. The difference is not incremental; it is a category of risk removed.
Speed and crawlability
Static pages are finished HTML served from the edge, which is why they load in under a second on a phone and why every crawler receives every word. WordPress can be made fast and crawlable with discipline; it is not so by default, and page builders often render content in ways crawlers miss.
Editing
The honest trade is editing. WordPress has a visual editor anyone can use. A static site is edited as content files with a build step; a lightweight editing interface closes most of the gap for non-technical staff, and the specification keeps every page consistent without a designer.
Scale
An authority program produces hundreds of pages a year to one specification. A build pipeline generates them with structure, schema, dates and links enforced. On WordPress the same consistency depends on people remembering rules.
Recommendation
Who each option suits.
For a professional practice whose site must be secure, fast, crawlable and able to carry an authority content program, choose a static build on Cloudflare Pages or an equivalent. Choose WordPress only where visual editing by many untrained staff outweighs the security and performance cost, and then harden it, patch it on a schedule and budget for the incident.
