Video with transcript versus video alone
A video alone is a file the engines can see exists and a platform can describe; a video with a verified transcript is text the engines can retrieve, cite and attribute, usable by people who cannot or will not watch, and verifiable to the same standard as a written page. The video builds the expert’s identity and the buyer’s confidence; the transcript is what gets cited. Publishing one without the other wastes most of the value.
At a glance
The criteria that decide it.
| Criterion | Video with transcript | Video alone |
|---|---|---|
| What engines retrieve | The transcript text, attributed to the page and author | Title, description and platform metadata |
| Accessibility | Readable, searchable, usable by screen readers | Captions at best |
| Verification | Transcript passes fact verification and sign-off | Unverified speech |
| Authorship | Author profile and markup on the page | Platform channel |
| Effort | Recording plus transcript production and review | Recording only |
| Where it lives | On your page, with structured data, and on the platform | On the platform |
Criteria
Each one, explained.
What engines retrieve
Engines index text. A video without a transcript offers them a title and a description. A verified transcript on the page offers them the whole explanation, with the author named, which is what earns a citation.
Verification and authorship
A spoken explanation can contain errors the expert would correct in writing. The transcript is verified like any page and signed by the expert, so the published words are ones the expert stands behind. The page carries the author markup; the platform carries the channel.
Accessibility
A transcript serves people who cannot hear, cannot watch, or want the answer faster than the video gives it. Accessibility obligations often require it.
Effort
Transcript production is a fraction of the recording effort and multiplies the return. The review step is the part that matters, and it is the step most organizations skip.
Recommendation
Who each option suits.
Always publish the transcript, verified and signed, on your own page with the video embedded and the platform copy linked. Video alone is acceptable only for material that is not meant to be cited, such as a welcome message. For explainers, the transcript is the asset and the video is its proof.
