Migrating a WordPress practice site without losing rankings
Visibility is lost in migrations through broken redirects, missing content and metadata left behind. Each is preventable with an inventory and a map.
A practice site moving from WordPress to a static build keeps its search visibility when every current URL is inventoried with its traffic, links and citations; every kept or moved page gets a one-hop redirect with the correct status code; titles, descriptions, canonicals and structured data are carried over; valuable content is reproduced rather than approximated; and indexing, errors and rankings are monitored for weeks after cutover. Google documents site moves with URL changes and the signals it expects; the work is applying them without exception.
In detail
What the evidence shows.
Inventory first
Export every URL from analytics, Search Console, the sitemap and a crawl. Attach traffic, inbound links, citations and rankings. Decide for each: keep at the same address, move, consolidate or retire. Most practice sites carry hundreds of forgotten pages, including thin location pages and old posts, and the inventory is where their fate is decided deliberately.
Redirects and metadata
The redirect map is old URL to new URL, one hop, permanent status, including images and documents with inbound links. Metadata and structured data move with the page. Internal links are rebuilt to the new addresses so nothing on the new site passes through a redirect. The map is tested on staging with a crawler before cutover.
Content parity
A page that ranked did so for a reason. Its substance is carried over, improved to the authority standard where possible, never replaced by a shorter summary because the new design preferred it. Retirement is a decision with a redirect, recorded in the parity report.
Cutover and monitoring
A low-traffic window, a content freeze, immediate recrawl of old URLs in production, sitemap resubmission, then daily monitoring of crawl errors, index coverage, rankings, citations and inquiries by source for several weeks. Brief fluctuation is normal; loss comes from errors the monitoring is there to catch. The migration checklist lists each step; see migration without ranking loss.
