Privileged access management for mid-sized organizations
Administrative accounts are the attacker’s objective. Managing them does not require an enterprise platform; it requires knowing where they are and removing standing privilege.
Privileged access management for a mid-sized organization is a set of disciplines before it is a product: an inventory of every account that can change systems, read everything or grant access, including vendor and service accounts; removal of standing privilege in favor of elevation when needed; separate administrative accounts from daily-use accounts; phishing-resistant authentication on all of them; recording of privileged sessions where feasible; and periodic review with records. A vault and a just-in-time tool make these easier at scale, but the disciplines deliver most of the risk reduction and can be implemented with the platforms the organization already has.
In detail
What the evidence shows.
Find them all
Domain and local administrators. Cloud control plane roles. Application administrators. Database owners. Vendor accounts with elevated rights. Service accounts running with privilege. The inventory is always longer than expected, and the forgotten entries are the dangerous ones.
Remove standing privilege
Administrators work from standard accounts and elevate for specific tasks, for a limited time, with a record. Where elevation tooling is unavailable, separate admin accounts used only for administration, never for email or browsing, achieve much of the effect. Service accounts get the minimum rights the service needs, and no interactive login.
Protect and record
Phishing-resistant MFA on every privileged account without exception. Session recording for the most sensitive systems. Alerts on privileged account creation, group changes and unusual use. Vendor privileged access through a governed path with expiry.
Review
Quarterly review where an owner confirms each privileged entitlement is still needed, with the record retained. Removal when roles change. This is the evidence that NIST SP 800-171 and every customer questionnaire asks for. See privileged access management and the glossary entry for privileged access management.
