When to keep paid search running indefinitely
The mandate to cut paid spend as earned demand grows is not a mandate to cut it to zero. Some spend earns its place for good.
Paid search should run for as long as it produces qualified inquiries at a cost the organization accepts and that earned demand does not yet cover. That can be indefinitely. Branded defense against competitors bidding on the firm’s name, intents where earned citations are structurally unlikely, time-sensitive demand, new markets before authority is built, and capacity the business needs to fill now are all legitimate reasons to keep spending. The test is evidence at the quarterly review, not an ideology about paid or earned.
In detail
What the evidence shows.
Where paid search keeps earning its place
Branded terms, where competitors bid on the firm’s name and a small spend protects the inquiry. Intents the engines answer with directories or platforms rather than with firm pages, where citation is unlikely however good the content. Urgent, transactional demand where the buyer will not read. New regions or services before the authority program has reached them.
Where it should fall
Intents that the organization’s authority pages now win in answer engines and organic results, where paid spend buys inquiries that would have arrived anyway. The redundancy analysis at each quarterly review identifies these by comparing paid inquiry intent with earned inquiry intent.
How the decision is made
On cost per qualified inquiry by campaign, inquiry volume by source, and earned-demand share, with the budget owner in the room and the decision recorded. A flat-fee manager has no reason to argue either way. The outcome is a budget allocation with reasons, revised quarterly.
What not to do
Do not cut spend on principle during the citation lag, when earned demand is still building. Do not keep spend by habit after earned demand has replaced it. Measure, decide, record. See the quarterly review framework and quarterly spend review.
