Why product and service pages dominate B2B citations

XFunnel found product and service content accounting for 46 to 70 percent of AI citations. The pages most firms treat as brochures are the ones engines quote.

XFunnel’s April 2025 analysis of 768,000 AI citations found product and service content accounting for between 46 and 70 percent of citations, depending on the category. When a buyer asks an engine which provider does what, the engine answers from pages that describe what providers do. Most firms write those pages as brochures: adjectives, no specifics, no author. The firms that are cited write them as answers: what the service is, when it is needed, what it produces, who stands behind it.

In detail

What the evidence shows.

The XFunnel finding

Across 768,000 citations analyzed in April 2025, product and service content was the most cited type, at 46 to 70 percent depending on category, ahead of blog posts, news and third-party content. The finding is intuitive once stated: commercial prompts ask about products and services, and retrieval goes to the pages that describe them.

Why most service pages are not cited

A typical service page says the firm is trusted, experienced and tailored, lists some bullet points and invites contact. There is no passage that answers a question, no named person, no specific claim an engine could lift. It is indexed and ignored. The brochure format was designed for a visitor who already arrived; it does not work for a system choosing whom to name.

What a citable service page contains

A declarative answer block in the first screen stating what the service is, when it is needed and what it produces. A capability grid linking to one page per capability, each with its own answer block, scope, deliverables, prerequisites and FAQ. Named authorship and review. Service schema with audience. This site’s own service and capability pages follow that structure.

The implication for the content plan

An authority program for a B2B firm should start with the service and capability pages, not the blog. They are where the commercial prompts land and where citations convert to inquiries. Explainers, comparisons and glossary entries then surround them and answer the component questions. See page specification.
