Glossary · A

AI Mode

AI Mode is Google’s conversational search experience in which the entire response is generated, follow-up questions are expected and sources are shown within and alongside the answer.

Extended definition

In more detail.

Unlike an AI Overview, which sits above a results list, AI Mode replaces the list with a conversation. It breaks a question into sub-questions, retrieves for each and synthesizes. Pages that answer the component questions, such as definitions, comparisons and criteria, are retrieved in AI Mode where a single broad page is not. Measurement requires a prompt set with follow-ups and repeated runs.

In our work

Where it appears.

Glossary, comparison and question pages exist in part because AI Mode retrieves component answers. Our prompt set design includes the follow-ups AI Mode invites.
