AI search

AI search is any search experience in which a generated answer, rather than a list of results, is the primary response to a query.

Extended definition

In more detail.

The term covers both standalone answer engines and AI features inside conventional search, such as Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode or Bing’s Copilot answers. What they share is that the user’s question is decomposed, material is retrieved, and an answer is composed with sources. For organizations that depend on being found, AI search changes the target from clicks to citations and the measurement from rankings to share of voice.

Where it appears.

Our baseline audit measures an organization’s standing in AI search before any work begins, so improvement is shown against evidence.
