NIST AI RMF

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is a voluntary framework, published in 2023, that organizes the management of AI risk into four functions: Govern, Map, Measure and Manage.

Extended definition

In more detail.

The framework describes outcomes rather than prescribing controls: governance structures and accountability for AI, mapping of systems and their contexts, measurement of trustworthiness characteristics, and management of identified risks. It is referenced in federal procurement, state regulation and customer requirements, which makes alignment a practical expectation for organizations using AI in consequential ways. It can stand alone or serve as a step toward ISO/IEC 42001.
