Vulnerability management
Vulnerability management is the continuous process of discovering security weaknesses across an organization’s systems, prioritizing them by exposure, fixing them within defined timelines and verifying closure.
Extended definition
In more detail.
It depends on complete asset inventory, authenticated scanning at an adequate frequency, a severity model that accounts for business context, clear ownership, timelines by severity, documented exceptions and verification of closure. A scanner that produces thousands of findings nobody acts on is not a program. Auditors, customers and insurers ask for evidence that critical findings are closed within a stated window.
