Freshness as a citation factor: what 16.9 million citations show
Ahrefs measured AI-cited URLs as about 25.7 percent fresher than organic results. What that means for a refresh cycle, and what it does not mean.
Across 16.975 million citations, Ahrefs found in July 2025 that URLs cited by AI engines were about 25.7 percent fresher than the URLs in organic search results for comparable queries. Engines prefer current sources. The operational consequence is a refresh cycle: every page carries a review interval, is reviewed when it expires or when its subject changes, and is revised with a new date. Freshness is earned by review, not by changing a date, and it does not substitute for substance.
In detail
What the evidence shows.
The measurement
Ahrefs compared the age of URLs cited in AI answers with the age of URLs in organic results across 16.975 million citations. The cited set was about 25.7 percent fresher. The study measures a correlation at scale; it does not isolate freshness as a cause, and other properties of recently revised pages (accuracy, currency of facts, structure updated to current practice) travel with the date.
Why engines prefer current sources
A generated answer that cites an outdated page is a wrong answer with a citation. Retrieval systems therefore weigh currency, particularly for topics that change: regulations, prices, product capabilities, engine behavior. A page revised in the past six months with a stated revision date gives the engine a reason to trust it.
What freshness is not
Changing a date without changing the page is not freshness; it is misrepresentation, and it is detectable. Freshness is the result of a real review: the expert confirms the page is current, revises what has changed and signs again. The revision date then means something.
The cycle in practice
Each page carries a refresh interval, typically 90 or 180 days by subject volatility. The schedule is generated from dates; pages that earn citations are reviewed first. A major refresh is treated as a page credit in our plans, because the work and the value are comparable. See why 180 days is the outer limit.
