Security posture reviews: scope, cadence, output
What a posture review covers, how often it should run and what it should hand leadership at the end.
A security posture review is an evidence-based assessment of the controls an organization has in place, how well they operate, the exposures that remain and the ability to detect and respond, across identity, endpoints, network, data, vendors, monitoring, response and recovery. It runs annually at minimum and after significant change, with lighter quarterly updates. Its output is a findings report graded by consequence with evidence references, a prioritized remediation plan with owners and dates, and an executive summary that states the posture and the decisions required. It establishes the baseline that executive reporting then tracks.
In detail
What the evidence shows.
Scope
Identity and access: accounts, MFA, privilege, leavers. Endpoints: management, protection, patching, encryption. Network: segmentation, remote access, exposed services. Data: classification, backups, retention. Vendors: access and oversight. Monitoring: coverage, alert handling. Response and recovery: plans, exercises, tested restores. Scope is agreed in advance and stated in the report.
Method
Evidence over interview. Configuration exports, logs, records and tests rather than descriptions. Controls validated under realistic conditions where feasible, following testing methods of the kind NIST SP 800-115 describes. Findings graded by consequence to the business, not by scanner severity.
Cadence
Annually as a full review; after migrations, acquisitions, reorganizations and incidents; quarterly as a lighter update of the remediation plan and the few measures that move. Posture drifts, and a review from two years ago describes an environment that no longer exists.
Output
Findings with evidence and consequence. A remediation plan ranked by exposure, with owners and dates, and acceptances recorded where remediation is declined. An executive summary in the language of decisions. An evidence pack mapped to the frameworks customers and insurers name. See security posture reviews and the glossary entry for security posture.
