Backup validation

Backup validation is the regular, documented restoration of data and systems from backup copies to confirm they are complete, usable and recoverable within the required time.

Extended definition

In more detail.

A successful backup job proves a copy was written, not that it restores. Validation restores real workloads, measures the time, checks integrity and confirms that the copies are isolated from the credentials an attacker would hold. Insurers and auditors ask whether backups are tested; backup reports do not answer that, restore records do.
