Device posture

Device posture is the security state of a laptop, phone or server at the moment it requests access: whether it is managed, patched, encrypted, running endpoint protection and free of known compromise.

Extended definition

In more detail.

Zero trust access decisions evaluate posture per request, so an unmanaged or unpatched device is denied or limited even with valid credentials. Posture requires device management, a defined standard, and the integration that lets the access layer read the state. It is the control that addresses home working, personal devices and the vendor laptop nobody has seen.
