Incident response
Incident response is the organized process of detecting, containing, investigating, eradicating and recovering from a security incident, and of meeting the notification obligations it triggers.
Extended definition
In more detail.
A response plan defines roles, decision authority, escalation, communication, evidence preservation and the external parties to engage: counsel, forensic specialists, the insurer and law enforcement. It is exercised through tabletops and drills, because a plan that has never been run fails on contact. Regulators and contracts impose notification deadlines that the plan must build in.
