Network segmentation
Network segmentation divides a network into zones with controlled traffic between them, so that a compromise in one zone cannot spread freely to the others.
Extended definition
In more detail.
Segmentation contains attacks, protects systems that cannot be patched such as operational technology and medical devices, and limits what a stolen credential can reach. It is implemented with firewalls, access control lists, virtual networks and identity-aware access, and it depends on knowing what talks to what. Flat networks, where everything can reach everything, are the most common finding in environments that have grown without design.
