Glossary · O
Original research
Original research is a published study that produces data nobody else has, such as a survey, benchmark or log analysis, with its method stated so that others must attribute the finding to its source.
Extended definition
In more detail.
A unique, attributable number is the strongest citation asset an organization can publish: engines, journalists and competitors who use it must cite it. Research requires data the organization controls or can collect lawfully, a method that survives expert scrutiny, honest limitations and distribution to the sources that will cite it. Operational data, anonymized and aggregated, often answers questions a whole sector asks.
