Secure maintenance window

A secure maintenance window is a scheduled period for changes to systems or infrastructure, governed so that the access it opens, the monitoring it suspends and the configuration it alters are all restored and verified when it closes.

Extended definition

In more detail.

Maintenance is when controls are loosened on purpose: accounts enabled, ports opened, alerts silenced. The window procedure records the plan, authorizes the access, confirms monitoring coverage during the work, and verifies at close that everything opened was closed and everything changed was intended. Many incidents trace to a window that never properly ended.
