Cost per qualified inquiry versus cost per click
One measures what the platform charges. The other measures what the business gets. Only one of them belongs in front of a decision-maker.
Cost per click is the auction price of a visit. Cost per qualified inquiry is spend divided by the number of inquiries the business would recognize as genuine prospects, by source. An account can lower its cost per click by attracting cheaper, less relevant clicks and get worse while appearing to improve. Cost per qualified inquiry cannot be gamed that way, because it is reconciled against inquiries that actually arrived. It also allows paid and earned sources to be compared on one basis, which is the comparison that decides budgets.
In detail
What the evidence shows.
Why cost per click misleads
It is the price of an input, not the value of an output. Broad targeting lowers it; relevance raises it. A manager rewarded for a falling cost per click is rewarded for buying worse traffic. In professional categories where clicks are expensive, the figure also draws attention to the auction rather than to the question of whether the visit became a client.
What qualified means
A written definition agreed with the business: the inquiry types, the minimum information, the exclusions (spam, job seekers, vendors, existing clients). Without the definition, counts are platform conversions, which include duplicates, test submissions and button clicks. With it, every inquiry is classified and the number means something.
Making the measure work
Conversion tracking that counts real inquiries. Attribution that includes calls and bookings, not only forms. Reconciliation of platform counts against the inquiry records the business keeps. The same definition applied to organic, AI-referred, direct and referral sources, so the comparison is honest.
What it enables
Budget allocated by campaign on inquiry evidence. Spend reduced where earned demand covers the same intent. A quarterly decision made on one number the executive understands. See conversion tracking integrity, attribution and call tracking and the glossary entry for cost per qualified inquiry.
