Digital PR for citations, not for links

The sources engines trust are often not your site. Being present in them, with substance and under the expert’s name, is the point.

Answer engines cite sources they already trust, and many of those are third parties: trade and professional press, associations, directories, knowledge bases, question-and-answer platforms, podcasts with transcripts. Digital PR for citations places the organization’s expertise in those sources, under the expert’s name, with facts consistent with the site. The goal is not a link for ranking purposes; it is to be encountered and trusted by the systems that decide whom to name, and to reinforce the entity through external profiles. Paid placements and link schemes are excluded.

In detail

What the evidence shows.

Why third-party sources matter

In competitor citation benchmarks the organizations cited most are often publishers and associations rather than commercial competitors. An engine that has encountered the firm’s expert in a trade journal, an association resource and a podcast transcript has three independent reasons to trust the firm’s own pages. A firm that exists only on its own site has one.

What gets placed

Expert commentary on live industry questions. Contributed articles with substance. Original research, which is the material most worth placing. Listings in directories and knowledge bases with entity facts that match the site exactly. Interviews with published transcripts. Everything carries the expert’s name and is consistent with the site’s facts.

What is excluded

Paid links. Placement schemes. Guest posts on sites that exist to sell guest posts. Mentions purchased in any form. These are both ineffective for citation and a reputational risk, and we neither make nor accept payment for mentions.

Measuring it

A placement record: what, where, when, and the observed effect in citation tracking. Placements raise probability; they do not guarantee citations, and the record says which ones moved the measurement. See citation seeding and digital PR and the glossary entry for digital PR.
