Entity consistency: the unglamorous foundation of GEO

Before an engine can cite you it has to know who you are. Most organizations have never checked whether their facts agree across the web.

An entity is a thing an engine recognizes and connects facts to. An organization becomes one when its name, address, founding, people, services and identifiers are stated the same way on its site, in its structured data and across its external profiles. When they disagree, the engine cannot connect the organization to its content and cites nobody, or cites a namesake. Entity consistency is the first thing we fix and the least visible, which is why it is usually broken.

In detail

What the evidence shows.

Where the facts live

The site’s Organization schema and page copy. Google Business Profile. LinkedIn. Wikidata and other knowledge bases. Crunchbase and company registers. Sector directories and associations. Social accounts. Each is a source the engines read, and each can state a different name, address or description.

How inconsistency fails

A firm renamed three years ago still has the old name in two directories. The address on the business profile is the previous office. The founder’s profile lists a different title from the site. The engine encountering these cannot be sure they describe one organization, so it attributes cautiously or not at all. In answers, the firm is mentioned vaguely or confused with a similarly named competitor.

Fixing it

Establish the canonical facts once. State them in Organization schema on every page, generated from one source so they cannot drift. Add sameAs links to each official profile. Align every external profile to the same facts. Give each published expert a Person profile with sameAs to their verified profiles. Then audit quarterly, because profiles change hands and facts drift.

Why it is foundational

Authorship, citations and share of voice all rest on the engine knowing who published the page. Content work on top of a broken entity underperforms and nobody can see why. See entity and schema engineering and the glossary entries for entity and sameAs.
