Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals are three Google-defined measures of page experience: Largest Contentful Paint for loading, Interaction to Next Paint for responsiveness, and Cumulative Layout Shift for visual stability.

Extended definition

In more detail.

Each has a published threshold for a good experience: 2.5 seconds or less for LCP, 200 milliseconds or less for INP, and 0.1 or less for CLS, measured at the 75th percentile of real visits. They are reported from field data in Search Console and from lab tools such as Lighthouse. Vitals affect search ranking modestly and user trust substantially; a page that is slow or shifts under the finger loses the visitor the content was meant to persuade.

We target Vitals in the green on mobile and enforce a performance budget in the build. See performance engineering and Core Web Vitals.
