Glossary · E
Entity
An entity is a distinct thing, such as an organization, a person, a product or a place, that search and answer engines recognize, identify and connect facts to.
Extended definition
In more detail.
Engines maintain representations of entities and the relationships between them. An organization is recognized as an entity when its name, identifiers, people, services and facts are stated consistently across its site, structured data and external profiles. Entity confusion, where facts disagree across sources, means the engine cannot connect the organization to its content, and cites nobody. Entity consistency is the foundation on which authorship and content attribution rest.
