The difference between being mentioned and being cited

Two different outcomes in a generated answer, two different causes, and why the pattern between them tells you what to fix.

A mention is the organization’s name appearing in a generated answer. A citation is a link to a specific page as the source for part of the answer. Mentions come from entity recognition: the engine knows the organization exists and associates it with the topic. Citations come from retrieval: the engine fetched a specific page and used it. An organization mentioned but not cited has an entity and weak pages; one cited but not named has pages and a weak entity. Measuring both, separately, shows which to fix.

In detail

What the evidence shows.

How each arises

Engines carry representations of entities built from structured data, business profiles, knowledge bases and consistent references. A mention draws on that representation. A citation requires a page to be fetched at retrieval time and selected as a source. The two systems overlap but are distinct, which is why the outcomes can diverge.

Mentioned, not cited

The engine knows who you are and what you do, but when it needs a passage to quote it finds nothing specific enough on your site and quotes a publisher or directory instead. The fix is content: pages that answer the component questions directly, with authors the engine can verify.

Cited, not mentioned

A page of yours is quoted, but the answer attributes it loosely or names another organization because the entity facts are inconsistent across your site and external profiles. The fix is entity engineering: canonical facts, Organization and Person schema, sameAs, consistent profiles.

Measuring both

Share-of-voice tracking records mentions and citations separately, with position and sentiment, by engine and prompt cluster. The monthly report shows the ratio and its trend. See mention and citation in the glossary, and entity consistency.
