Glossary · S
Static site
A static site is a website generated in advance from content files by a build step and served as finished HTML, with no content management system, database or server-side application behind it.
Extended definition
In more detail.
Static sites are fast because the work is done once at build time, secure because there is nothing to log in to or patch at the application layer, and readable because every word is in the HTML response. Content is edited as files; the build regenerates the site and can enforce structure, schema, dates and links on every page. Dynamic features are added selectively through small functions or trusted services rather than a full application.
